Escaping Hitler: A Jewish Haven in Chile

Eva Goldschmidt-Wyman was born in Stuttgart Germany and as a young child, she and her parents immigrated to Chile in 1939 to escape Nazi Germany.   In December 1938, Aguirre Cerda had been elected President of Chile and opened the country to Jewish immigrants, saving the lives of many Jews.  He also replaced some of the Chilean consuls in Europe who were anti-Semitic.  Ms. Wyman will speak about her family’s courageous escape from Nazi Germany to Chile, as detailed in her book “Escaping Hitler: A Jewish Haven in Chile.”  There will be a book sale and signing immediately following the presentation.

Free and open to the public.
