Americans and the Holocaust
Field Trip at Milwaukee Public Library Central Location
Available November 13, 2023-January 5, 2024
Grade level: 6-12th grade
Time commitment: 2.5 hours
The Americans and the Holocaust traveling exhibition was curated by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The exhibition addresses important themes in American history, including Americans’ responses to refugees, war and genocide in the 1930s and ‘40s. This exhibition will challenge the commonly held assumptions that Americans knew little and did nothing about the Nazi persecution and murder of Jews as the Holocaust unfolded.
During this field trip students will take a guided tour of the Americans and the Holocaust exhibition and take part in an interactive workshop. This workshop will have students exploring library periodicals, microfilms, and special collections to discover what Americans knew as the Holocaust unfolded.

In partnership with the Milwaukee Public Library and the Nathan and Esther Pelz Holocaust Education Resource Center (HERC).
This 3 part program includes:
*A $30 non-refundable deposit to hold your group’s reservation is required.
Join HERC Educators on a visit to the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center in Skokie, Illinois for their docent-led museum program “In Our Voices”.
*A discounted $5 per student Museum entrance fee is required. Travel subsidies are available.
HERC Educators and Holocaust survivors will recount the history and stories of the Holocaust in this contemplative outdoor setting located at the Harry & Rose Samson Family Jewish Community Center in Whitefish Bay.
